Devotional - The Promises of God
Exodus 32:10-14
We have to believe what God has promised to do in His Word. So many of us know the Word of God, but we need to apply it in every situation that we face. It says in 2 Corinthians 1:20, “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” That means that all the promises of God are answered “Yes!” to us in Christ Jesus. God has already given us His “Yes!”, we simply need to believe what He says, and come into agreement with our “Amen.” When we come into agreement with what He has said, we are confirming that we believe God’s Word to be faithful and true, declaring “That’s right!” and reiterating our covenant with God to fulfil His promises in our lives.
In the book of Exodus we see how Moses understood God’s Word and that when God promises to do something, He will see to its accomplishment. As it says in Isaiah 55:11, “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void. But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” That means that God’s promises, His Word, never returns to Him without accomplishing its intended result, or succeeding in the matter for which it is sent.
In Exodus 32:10-14, we can see how Moses believed a promise, and applied the word spoken by God to turn their situation around.
“Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.” Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, and said: “Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, ‘He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ” So the Lord relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.”
The Lord wanted to destroy the people of Israel because of their rebellion (vs.10), but Moses intervened and spoke to the Lord. Moses asked God to remember His servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the people who were in direct covenant with God. In verse 13, Moses brings to remembrance the oath God made with them; “You bound yourself with an oath to them.” Reminding oneself and God about the very things He has promised to do is key to seeing the fulfilment of the promise. If God said it, He will surely do it. God will perform it according to His Word and because we are in covenant with Him because of the blood of Jesus (Luke 22:20), all He needs us to do is to come in agreement with His promises with our “Amen!”
As we see with Moses, he took God’s oath literally and reminded God of the very thing He spoke. It is not that God forgot what He promised, but by Moses speaking it out again, he demonstrated his faith in God and revealed that he believed God’s Word to be true. He took the promise of God and applied it to his current situation which resulted in a turnaround for him and the children of Israel. ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ” Immediately after that, God changed His mind about destroying the people of Israel (vs. 14.) Moses demonstrated how we can stand on God’s promises to change our situations. He heard the promise (the oath) made by God, believed the Word, and when the time came to stand on that promise, he did so by reminding himself of the promise and speaking it out in faith, knowing that God will see to its fruition.
It is important to know the Word of God. But not just for knowing sake, but to know what God has said, and what He has promised to do. We have to believe that when God promises to do something, He has made an oath, and is going to accomplish it.
I encourage you to take the time to go through everything that the Lord has promised to do in your life and in your family. Take the Word of God, take your prophetic Words that you have received and remind yourself of everything God has said in your life. Bring to remembrance His promises and believe that they shall come to pass! It is through Christ that we hear and believe God’s promises and say the declaration of faith, “Amen”.
“And as his “yes” and our “amen” ascend to God, we bring Him glory!” By believing God and coming into agreement with His promises, we are bringing God glory. Let us bring God glory by believing Him and standing on His promises in our lives.
